Funding for Transportation Headquarters in El Paso Gets Texas Approval

El Paso County Transit Facility El Paso Transportation Authority rendering

Exactly $16 million has been secured for the construction of a long-planned public transportation facility on the far east side of El Paso.

The project will go up near the intersection of Cherrington Street and Windermere Avenue.

The money is coming through the Texas Transportation Commission and takes the form of a package combining $12.8 million that is coming out of Washington, and another $3.2 million secured in Austin.

In announcing the funding, Texas State Senator Cesar Blanco said the new facility “will help ensure buses are maintained safely and operate on time, while giving transit operators the tools they need to better serve our growing community.”

Altogether, the Texas Transportation Commission this spring has awarded just over $39 million in both state and federal funds for transportation projects in 27 locations. Those locations are primarily based in rural transit districts.

The federal funding is specifically coming from the Federal Transit Administration.

The new facility, which will belong to the El Paso County Transit Authority, will house both administrative offices and maintenance space for a reported combined 36 transit vehicles and half a dozen support vehicles.

Work on the facility is expected to begin later this year.
