Plans are advancing for the construction in southern Colorado of what will be a large combination convenience store and fueling stop to be owned and operated by the Buc-ee’s Holdings Incorporated, otherwise known simply as Buc-ee’s.
Described as a “mega travel center,” the project, if approved, will go up near Interstate 26 and County Line Road in the northern part of El Paso County.
The main structure will measure around 74,000 square feet and include 60 fueling dispensers under two large canopies, along with some 20 electric vehicle charging stations.
Buc-ee’s has been in the process of asking El Paso County for a zoning interpretation of the land it wants to build on.
In seeking what is known as an “administrative interpretation,” the company will in essence be getting an initial green light through the county office of planning and community development to proceed, although other steps in the approval process remain.
Buc-ee’s s purchased the land for the project two months ago.
Opponents of the project, notes the Denver Post, “have raised concerns about its impact on traffic, water, and the character of the area.”
Launched in 1982 in the southeastern Texas city of Clute, Buc-ee’s today has around 55 locations not only in the Lone Star State, but also throughout the South, Midwest, and West.
In recent years the company’s location footprint has grown as it houses an increasing variety of retail, grocery, and restaurant offerings. The average size of a Buc-ee’s currently ranges between 50,000 to 75,000 square feet, substantially larger than the typical 2,400 to 3,000 square-foot 7-Eleven store.
