A company specializing in data center equipment has announced plans to build an extensive new factory complex in Socorro, some 12 miles to the southeast of downtown El Paso.
The project belongs to the Wiwynn Corporation, which is based in Taipei, Taiwan, and will go up inside the borders of the Socorro Logistics Center at 9220 Socorro Road.
It is thought that Wiwynn will spend upwards of $152 million on the new facility, a project that City of Socorro officials say is significant both in substance and symbolism.
In announcing the building of the new facility, Rudy Cruz, the mayor of Socorro, said the project is a “statement to the world.”
Continued Cruz: “Wiwynn’s decision to plant roots here proves that our city is no longer a hidden gem. We are a rising star in global tech.”
The project is the result of ongoing talks for several months between Wywynn, City of Socorro, and Borderplex Alliance officials.
With more than $7.1 billion in revenue in 2023, Wiwynn has made a name for itself both designing and building cloud infrastructure products including everything from networking equipment to servers and storage systems.
Last year, Wiwynn was listed by Time magazine as one of the world’s most sustainable companies. That list, said the magazine, was made up of companies who have made “trackable public commitments to doing better for the planet.”
