Historic Los Poblanos Site to See Facility Expansion

Members of the Albuquerque City Council are currently reviewing a project that could lead to the expansion of a long-standing organic farm.

Located at 4803 Rio Grande Boulevard NW, the Los Poblanos Historic Inn & Organic Farm wants to build a new production facility that will measure around 5,000 square feet.

Plans also call for some 4,000 square feet of warehouse space.

Altogether, the project is expected to cost just under $2.6 million to build, with Los Poblanos putting the up lion’s share of funding at $2.3 million.

The effort is also receiving $250,000 in State of New Mexico funding, which may be combined with an additional $25,000 to be approved by the city council.

That city funding will come in the form of Local Economic Development Act assistance.

In a statement, Albuquerque Mayor Tim Keller emphasized the importance of city funding for the Los Poblanos project, remarking: “We’re working with local businesses and partners at the State to create an environment where more locals can find work and small businesses can thrive.”

The city council is expected to vote on approving the funding for Los Poblanos during its March 15 meeting.

Located on 25 acres and established in the 1920s, Los Poblanos includes both a ranch house and inn. The property is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Distinguished by its formal gardens and giant cottonwood trees, Los Poblanos is also a working farm growing such staples as string beans, corn, pumpkins, and melons.
