Work may begin soon on nearly a dozen facility and infrastructure projects belonging to the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology, primarily at its home campus in Socorro.

Founded in 1889, the school is one of the oldest institutes of higher learning in the state with a select enrollment of around 1,400 students primarily majoring in science, engineering, and physics.

Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham has given her approval of exactly $1.2 million in capital outlay funding for New Mexico Tech that was earlier passed by the state legislature.

The largest individual outlay at $500,000 is going to the planning, design, and building of new laboratory space on all three of the school’s campuses in Socorro, Hildago, and Eddy counties.

An outlay of $200,000 is slated for classroom and laboratory upgrades, also at all three campuses, while $100,000 is targeting accessibility improvements to the three-story residential Altamirano Hall on the main Socorro campus.

Another $100,000 will go for improvements to the southwest Socorro campus entrance, a project that will include new landscaping and signage.

In separate legislation, the school has also secured some $40 million in funding for the creation of a wireless technology hub and aquifer monitoring program.
