Some $1.8 million in funding out of Santa Fe has been secured for the construction of an outdoor amphitheater in the northern part of the state.
Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham has given her approval to the project belonging to the Picuris Pueblo, which is roughly 40 miles to the southwest of the city of Taos.
The project will see the building of an amphitheater and combined indoor and outdoor market space within the borders of the historic pueblo.
With a population of less than one hundred residents, the Picuris Pueblo is a popular tourist destination, with visitors from across the country attending the annual San Lorenzo Feast Day in August.
The capital outlay for building the amphitheater was one of the largest items approved earlier this spring by members of the New Mexico State Legislature for Taos County.
Altogether, the county is receiving a total of nearly $21 million in capital outlay funding. Other big-ticket items: $1.2 million for improvements to the Taos Youth and Family Center in the city of Taos; and $130,000 for the renovation of the Penasco High School in the town of Penasco.
