New housing units are in the offing on a campus in Denver with a storied history.
Johnson and Wales University was located at 7150 Montview Boulevard and was part of a larger network of Johnson and Wales private schools across the country.
While the Providence, Rhode Island main campus and several satellite campuses have remained opened, the Denver location ceased operations in the spring of 2021.
The closure of the school’s Denver campus prompted concerns among city officials and preservationists regarding the future of the historic 25-acre campus, which was originally the home to the Colorado Women’s College.
That concern led to a partnership purchase of the campus between the Urban Land Conservancy, the Denver Housing Authority, and the Denver Public Schools. And out of that partnership was born the Commons at Mosaic, an affordable housing effort with 58 units.
Now the Colorado Housing and Finance Authority has announced that $6 million in funding has been secured for the effort, with the units slated for residents earning between 30% to 60% of Area Median Income.
The larger campus project includes childcare and family play areas, common spaces, gardens, and bike storage space.
A unique project in its conception and scope, the project is also getting funding from Proposition 123, which was approved by Colorado voters in 2022 and provides upwards of $300 million annually for affordable housing efforts.
