A long popular Taos motel/motor lodge opened in late 1960 is now on the market.
Located on a seven-acre site at 413 Paseo del Pueblo Norte, the Kachina Lodge has through the years has had a little bit of everything.
The lodge featured a swimming pool with a sun terrace, coffee shop, cocktail lounge, and what was called the Hopi Dining Room. It was frequently mentioned in national tourist guidebooks that particularly praised its pueblo-inspired exterior and Indian arts interior design.
For a variety of reasons, the two-story lodge was closed in 2022 and, according to the Taos News, was soon a “frequent source of complaints about blight.”
Upwards of $1.8 million in electrical, mechanical, and plumbing system upgrades were undertaken by a new owner some two years ago.
Designated as a Class B structure, the building houses just under 120 rooms and front office space. The property is being listed by Tammen Hospitality Partners of Phoenix.
When the lodge was inaugurated in December of 1960, a crowd of nearly one hundred visitors were treated, noted one account, to a roast beef dinner and prodigious amounts of champagne, along with “after dinner liquor and cigars, and a flaming baked Alaska for dessert.”
