Innovative Colorado Affordable Housing Project, to Be Built on Former Ballfield, Gets State Funding

State funding has been secured in Colorado for the construction of an apartment complex in Denver that will house 340 new residential units.

The Ballfield at Auraria is set for construction at a two-acre site at the intersection of 11th Street and Auraria Parkway.

In the planning stage for more than a year, and spearheaded by several partners, the project has now received a big $15 million in funding as a result of Proposition 123, which was approved by state voters in 2022.

That measure has since led to the creation of an Affordable Housing Financing Fund, fueled by revenue from a 0.1% state income tax and designed to support new housing initiatives throughout Colorado.

The Ballfield at Auraria project is one of half a dozen housing efforts now receiving support from the fund, support that in dollar terms amounts to nearly $39.4 million.

The Ballfield at Auraria is named in tribute to the baseball field that once belonged to the Metropolitan State University of Denver. Its sponsoring partners include the Auraria Higher Education Center, the Community College of Denver, and the University of Colorado at Denver.

The project, upon completion, will also include space for early childhood learning.
