International Code Council Soliciting Industry Views on Home Construction Codes
Public comments are expected to be received until November 28 on a review of the all-important International Residential Code.
That code, as compiled by the Washington-based International Code Council, provides a model construction code for one- and two-family dwellings and is regularly updated every three years.
In announcing the public comment period, the International Code Council earlier this month said its goal is to “identify potential changes that can reduce construction costs and simplify the code without degrading existing life safety requirements.”
The review is being facilitated by a research team composed of experts from Clemson University, Western Michigan University, and San Jose State University.
In a press release issued by the National Association of Home Builders it is noted that the public input will help “identify provisions in the International Residential Code to improve” via future International Code Council development cycles.
The nonprofit International Code Council was established in 1994 and has promulgated standards for such building challenges as accessibility, fire prevention, and materials used in construction, among other issues. It is regarded as the leading source in the country for model codes, standards, and building safety solutions.
In a website posting, the ICC has stated that input system regarding the International Residential Code is purposely designed to be a “consensus process involving stakeholders from throughout the home building industry.”
