Plans are underway for the building of a new apartment complex that will go up in a busy section of northeast Phoenix.

The project will see the construction of a six-story structure on a site that is currently a parking lot, on the southwest side of the big Camelback Colonnade shopping center whose official address is 1919 E. Camelback Road.

That shopping center with more than 40 retailers was opened in 1964 and was one of the first climate-controlled facility of its kind in southern Arizona.

As planned, the project on a 2.5-acre portion of a larger 23-acre site will include just under 220 residential units, with 182 of that number designated as either one- or two-bedroom apartments. Another 34 units will be made up of studio apartments.

The owners of the planned complex, Red Development and the Federal Realty Investment Trust, are pushing for a rezoning designation of the site that will allow for a mixed-use project that would also include some office and restaurant space.

Last month the project won the approval of the Camelback Village Planning Committee. The project has since also been approved by staff for the Phoenix Planning Commission, with certain stipulations.
