Work bringing up to date the headquarters of the Las Cruces Police Department is expected to accelerate now that additional state funding has been secured.
Members of the New Mexico State Legislature approved upwards of $200,000 in capital outlay funding for the Las Cruces police, with $50,000 expected to target the work at the station located at 217 East Picacho Avenue.
Late last year the station work was placed on an infrastructure capital improvement project list, after winning the approval of the Las Cruces City Council for submission to the state legislature.
That $50,000 is expected to be used to upgrade office space belonging to the criminal investigation section and well as the records and identification department in the one-story structure.
The 32,000 square foot structure was built in the summer of 1991 at a cost of $3.5 million, but according to department officials, has had some space issues in recent years due to the Las Cruces Police Department’s expanding operations.
