Planning could be underway next year for a series of library construction and upgrade projects in Albuquerque, depending upon the mood of city voters in November.

A $350 million general obligation bond will appear on the ballot that will include funding for a project rehabilitating the Juan Tabo Library campus.

Located at 3409 Juan Tabo Boulevard NE, the library is one of 18 such facilities making up the Albuquerque & Bernalillo County Public Library system.

Built to accommodate the growing northeast section of the city, the library was formally opened in early 1983 at a cost of around $1.2 million.

The ballot language for the library section of the general obligation bond is proposing that exactly $300,000 be delegated for the planning, design, construction, renovation, and rehabilitation of the Juan Tabo Library campus, as well as the library building itself.

The $4.4 million library bond will also see $1 million to “design, construct, equip, furnish, and renovate current outdated library facilities.”

That work could include heating and cooling system upgrades, safety and security systems, and roof repair and replacement work.
