A one-story modern building in Fort Collins that once housed an AMC Cinema outlet may soon be repurposed as a live performing arts theater.

AMC closed its operations at the 30-year-old structure, located at 2525 Worthington Circle on the southeast side of the city, in early 2021. Since then, the nearly 18,000-square-foot building, which was previously a Cinema Saver 6, has remained empty.

Now the Fort Collins-based Debut Theater Company, a local theater and acting company, has expressed an interest in acquiring the Class C structure and upgrading it with the construction of a new seating configuration that will have enough space for 100 people.

According to city records, plans for the upgrading of the structure, which was earlier listed for sale for $1.7 million, also include adding stairs to an existing doorway to “align with the finished floor, and replacing the existing handrails.”

Architect for the project is the Fort Collins-based Ripley Design, Incorporated.

Additional work on the two-acre site will see the building of a vestibule to ensure that the structure is compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Founded in 1991, the Debut Theater Company is the only young person’s theater school and acting company in northern Colorado. The group is currently headquartered in a single-story, 4,200-square-foot structure some 3 miles to the northeast at 827 Riverside Avenue.
