Macayo’s Phoenix Restaurant Property Now on the Market

A nearly 8,000-square-foot, nicely designed building that has been part of the Macayo’s Mexican Food empire in Phoenix is up for sale.

Launched in 1946, Macayo’s is one of the most popular restaurant operations in southern Arizona. Said to be the inventor in 1946 of the chimichanga, the company was purchased two years ago by the restaurant group Horizon Hospitality of Overland Park, Kansas.

Since that acquisition, Horizon has opened one new Macayo’s restaurant on top of the 11 already in operation.

Now commercial real estate service CRBE, with offices in Phoenix, is listing a Macayo’s property at 12637 S 48th Street for sale. Asking price: just over $3 million.

The structure, built in 1997, is classified as a Class B building and sits on a nearly 2-acre site.

Described as an “institution and tourist destination” by the Arizona Republic, Macayo for decades has been visually identified by a logo graced with the image of a colorful, wing-flapping macaw.
