Building on its long-established ties to metro Phoenix, the Mayo Clinic has announced its intention to build a 150,000 square foot education and research building that will be a part of its existing medical complex.
The Rochester, Minnesota-based Mayo says it will cost around $131 million to build the new structure, which will add some 1.6 million additional square feet of facility space it operates in Arizona.
Mayo opened its first facility in Phoenix, an acute care hospital, in the summer of 1987.
As planned, the structure will go up next door to Arizona State University’s modern Health Futures Center. A walkway will be built to connect the two buildings.
Founded in 1864 in Rochester, the non-profit Mayo Clinic is one of the largest medical education systems in the world. It has up and running similar campuses in Rochester and Jacksonville, Florida.
Work is expected to begin on what is being called the Integrated Education and Research Building in March of next year, with a completion date of sometime in 2024.
