Mayo Clinic Set to Expand its Busy Phoenix Campus

Plans are now underway for the construction of a 1.2 million-square-foot expansion of the Mayo Clinic campus in Phoenix.

The project is expected to cost around $1.9 billion to complete, and will see the construction of a procedural building, nearly a dozen operating rooms, and two new patient units housing upwards of 48 beds.

The new facility will also have a modern lobby space described as an “enhanced arrival experience for patients and visitors.” An additional feature will see construction of a two-story indoor promenade that will wrap around the front section of the campus.

Founded in 1864, the non-profit Mayo Clinic is based in Rochester, Minnesota and has campuses in that city and Jacksonville, Florida, along with its southern Arizona presence.

In a statement, Dr. Richard Gray, chief executive officer of the Mayo Clinic in Arizona, said the Phoenix expansion project will “forever change the patient and staff experience in Arizona as the Mayo Clinic grows and reinvents its nationally recognized clinical care, research, and education.”

Gray added that the project will expand clinical space on the campus by some 60%, “allowing us to care for more patients than ever before.”

Work on the expansion is expected to begin later this year, with a rough 2031 completion date.

The larger Mayo Clinic Arizona opened its first facilities in Scottsdale in 1987 before building a $105 million hospital in Phoenix that was completed in the fall of 1998.
