Move of Semiconductor Cleaning Company to Mesa Seen as One More High-Tech Coup for Southern Arizona City

A company specializing in semiconductor equipment parts cleaning has announced plans to set up a production facility on a 12.5-acre site in Mesa.

The South Korean-based KiMiCo is a subsidiary of the larger MiCo group, which is also the umbrella group for such companies as MiCo Ceramics, MiCo Power, and MiCo Bio Med.

Mesa city officials have worked for months to get KiMiCo to move to the southern Arizona city. At the announcement of the move, Mayor John Giles hailed the company for its “cutting edge work in precision cleaning and coatings,” remarking that it is precisely this sort of innovation that is diving Mesa’s’ growth, and “helping to shape the future of technology.”

Founded in 1996, KiMoCo launched its U.S. operations in Austin in 2007, while also running facilities in both China and Taiwan.

According to the company’s website, its precision cleaning and special coating services have contributed to both a reduction of costs for its customers as well as “improved yield rates.”

Plans call for the new Mesa KiMoCo facility to be set up on the southeast side of the city, in the Superstition Springs area. The company will repurpose an existing 125,000-square-foot facility, representing a roughly $50 million capital investment.

With a growing population of nearly 520,000 people, Mesa has emerged as a tech hot spot, with such companies as Apple, AT&T, and Infineon establishing operations.

The city has seen a nearly 40% increase in its gross domestic product in the last six years, owing largely to its tech industry sector.
