Plans to substantially repurpose a structure for use as a new artificial intelligence data center in Windsor, Colorado are moving forward, with hopes that a portion of the facility will be operational by the end of this year.

The project belongs to the New York-based data center developer Global AI and envisions altering interior space in a massive 505,000-square-foot structure located at 2000 Howard Smith Avenue.

Built in 1971, the facility formerly served as a production facility for the Carestream Health company, which ceased operations at the site nearly two years ago.

Carestream, specializing in medical imaging systems and non-destructive testing solutions, was formerly a part of Eastman Kodak’s Health Group.

The closing of Carestream represented Weld County’s last link with the Eastman Kodak Company, which employed several thousand residents. At its height, Eastman Kodak represented upwards of 90% of all film, and nearly that high of a percentage of all camera sales in the country.

Advances in technology and the rise of digital photography ultimately led to Eastman Kodak’s bankruptcy in 2012, before it underwent a corporate restructuring.

Global AI has now submitted paperwork to Weld County that will allow it to demolish certain portions of the Howard Smith Avenue structure.
