New Albuquerque Location for Growing Maverik Store Chain May be in the Works

Preliminary plans are underway for the building of a new outlet in southeast Albuquerque that would be a part of the large Maverik gas station chain.

That chain, which is based in Salt Lake City, Utah, operates under the larger FJ Management Incorporated, and has more than 400 combined gas station and convenience stores nationally.

The company has long been a presence in the West and traces its roots to the founding in 1928 of a station called Reuel Call in Afton, Wyoming.

Known for its bright red gas pumps and sign lettering, Maverik two years ago acquired properties that operated under the Kum & Go chain and has since been expanding its footprint throughout the West.

Just this month alone, the chain opened locations in Cold Canyon, Arizona; and West Valley City, Utah; with plans in the works for new outlets in Lathrop, California and Clovis, New Mexico.

An additional New Mexico presence may soon become reality at a site at 2103 Carlisle Boulevard in Albuquerque that was the home to a former Whole Foods Market.

That structure was built roughly 25 years ago and has changed tenant hands several times, most recently serving as a Spirit Halloween store.

Maverik has now purchased the land and submitted to the City of Albuquerque a conditional use variation application. A public hearing on that application is expected to be held next month.
