New Arts Academy and General Facility Upgrades Planned for Arizona’s Agua Fria School District

Plans are now underway for facility work at a rapidly growing school district in southern Arizona.

In November, voters in the Agua Fria Union High School District, which serves the cities of Avondale, Buckeye, and Goodyear, gave a green light to a $138 million bond designed in part to fund improvement to facilities on five separate campuses.

The bond, which was narrowly approved on a vote of 50.3% to 49.6%, was deemed particularly important because many of the district’s structures are at least 60 years old or more. For that reason, work will generally see, according to a bond pamphlet produced by the district during the election, “replacement or repairs to aging systems like air conditioning, roofs, and parking lots.”

More substantive work is expected to focus on the remodeling and upgrading of classrooms district wide.

The upgrade work comes as the district, with headquarters based in Avondale, is building a new high school in Goodyear, which is scheduled to be opened this fall. Additional plans have been announced to put up what is officially being called an Arts Academy and Performing Arts Center in the city of Litchfield Park.

The new facility will include a grand lobby, studio space, classrooms, office space, and a 700-seat theater.

Plans for the new arts academy won the approval of the Agua Fria High School District Governing Board in January, with expectations that the facility will be completed in time for the fall 2026 semester.

The district currently has more than 9,500 students, up from 1,600 in 2010.
