The City of Tucson has posted a Request for Qualifications for a project seeing the ongoing adaptive reuse of the former Tucson Fire Department Station 8 building.
The reuse has seen the opening of the Amphi Housing First Resource Center, named in honor of the surrounding Amphi neighborhood, and has a current capacity of around 70 beds.
Located at 250 W. King Road, the one-story brick building has gone through the early stages of being repurposed into a “low-barrier congregate shelter” that has sleeping quarters in the former station’s bays.
Now the City wants to add what it calls a “non-congregate area” that will include an enclosed, climate-controlled semi-permanent structure.
That structure, according to the RFQ posting, will have restrooms, showers, a laundry room, and storage space. It will also be built adjacent to a pet-friendly area.
As a design build project, the structure, notes the posting, “needs to be able to be removed from the site, if needed.”
The Amphi housing facility was made official in the spring of 2025 when the city’s Housing First program fast-tracked the project.
The former fire station, built in 1968 and once regarded as one of the busiest such stations in the country, was decommissioned in 2021 after the Tucson Fire Department decided to move Station 8 to a new facility at 1025 West Prince Road.
