The El Paso City Council has unanimously approved taking on the administrative duties for a project that will see the building of what is being called an Advanced Manufacturing District.
The vote will make it possible for the city to partner with the University of Texas at El Paso on the hub project with the hope of securing federal funding.
In a statement, UTEP President Heather Wilson said the school’s “cutting edge advanced manufacturing know-how and aerospace research” will spirit the hub, which she additionally noted will “advance discovery, spin out companies, and educate students.”
Initial funding in the form of a $15 million National Science Foundation grant for the expansive project was terminated last year when information submitted by UTEP proved inaccurate.
At the time that that funding was yanked, plans called for building the advanced manufacturing district on a 250-acre site not far from the El Paso International Airport.
Both the City and UTEP will submit documentation to Washington for the project once the government shutdown comes to an end.
