Plans are advancing for the building of a new waterline project in the Upper Valley of El Paso.
The project, replacing existing aging waterlines, will be built along a 3-mile stretch of Love Road, between Country Club Road on the north and Emory Road on the south.
To be undertaken by the utility El Paso Water, the project has long been in the planning stage and according to the company will “improve reliability in the area” upon completion.
The Love Road project is part of a larger ongoing effort by El Paso Water to replace older pipelines throughout the city, many of which are made of iron or galvanized steel. Those more than 60-year-old lines are a health risk because they are subject to corrosion. The pipelines are also wasteful because of frequent breaks.
The company has said that on average it has seen anywhere from five to seven pipeline breaks for every one hundred miles.
Last year, El Paso Water spent upwards of $16.2 million on water pipeline replacements as part of a system that encompasses more than 2,000 miles of water lines.
According to the American Society of Civil Engineers, the price tag for updating all of the country’s aging waterlines is more than $625 billion.
El Paso Water officials are planning to hold a public input meeting on the Love Road project on August 27 at the city’s Westside Regional Command Center.
