A project in Marana, Arizona calling for the grade separation of two public roads has now received some $6.4 billion in funding from Washington for its development and design phases.

That funding is coming through the Federal Railroad Administration and is part of a much larger $1.2 billion awarded to a series of rail and road infrastructure projects across the country.

Such investments, said Sean Duffy, the Secretary of Transportation, will help ensure that “the future of rail and the safety of passengers, rail workers, and the great Americans who share these transportation corridors, continues to improve.”

Two of the largest individual grants is seeing $72 million going to the Port Authority of Kansas City for a grade separation project; and $46 million to the Texas Department of Transportation for the building of an overpass in Fort Worth.

With no little fanfare, the Transportation Department has announced what it calls the “Golden Age of Rail,” designed to build and modernize rail crossings nationally.

That effort is particularly funded via this fiscal year’s Railroad Crossing Elimination Grant Program designed to do away with “unsafe highway-rail conflict points,” while also upgrading railroad traffic signals.

The most recent round of funding is going to 91 individual projects in 37 states.
