Planning for new hotel construction projects nationally during the second quarter of this year was up by 3% over where things stood in the second quarter of 2025, according to a new industry survey.
The Portsmouth, New Hampshire-based Lodging Econometrics is reporting that as of the end of June there were 6,280 new hotel projects underway, representing a total of 737, 036 rooms.
The number of projects, meanwhile, that are under construction totaled 1,120, which includes 138,776 rooms.
The greatest growth is being seen in what are described as the “upper midscale chain” hotels, which saw 2,282 new projects between April and June, comprising 219,875 rooms. The second highest numbers were seen in the upscale chain properties, with 1,427 projects, representing 177,756 rooms.
Developers, at the same time, continue to be drawn to extended-stay hotel brands which saw 2,473 individual projects in the planning stage, representing 352,028 rooms.
“Throughout the first two quarters” of this year, notes the report, “148 new extended-stay hotels: 15,397 rooms were opened across the country.” The Lodging Econometrics report is forecasting that by the end of this year, exactly 293 extended stay hotels will be open, along with 30, 341 rooms.
The renovation end of hotel work has seen 1,965 individual projects for a total of 259,445 rooms.
The Lodging Econometrics report comes as the publication Hotel Dive is noting that overall hotel construction volume has been on the downside this year. “U.S. government actions have caused economic uncertainty, and tariffs have negatively impacted construction pipelines.”
