Planning is expected to begin soon on the building of an indoor/outdoor tennis facility in Boulder, the full dimensions of which have yet to be decided.
A joint project between the City of Boulder and the University of Colorado at Boulder, the project will see the construction of at least eight outdoor courts just to the south of the East Boulder Recreation Center, which is located at 5660 Sioux Drive.
In a statement, Ali Rhodes, director of the city’s parks and recreation department, said, “This is a terrific example of how creative partnerships can help address mutual needs.”
The site was purchased by the City of Boulder some five years ago and from the start was expected to be used for recreational purposes.
An ongoing site analysis is expected to show how many of the courts will be interior courts, with reports indicating that at least four such courts will be constructed.
CU’s interest in the project is seen in a statement issued by the school’s athletic director, Rick George, who noted that the planned facility “will give our student athletes the resources to compete at the highest level, while also creating opportunities for tennis and pickleball players throughout Boulder.”
It is expected that once all of the pre-construction documents have been filed with the city, and the requisite permits granted, work will begin on the new facility sometime in the summer of 2026.
A document called Tennis and Pickleball Court System Plan that was put together by the Boulder Parks and Recreation Department, had earlier suggested that owing to growing demand, the city should anticipate building nearly two dozen tennis courts in the next several years.
