The most successful grocery store chain in Colorado history may soon be seeing construction of yet one more location in the growing town of Windsor.
Launched in 1947, the Denver-based King Soopers company has nearly 120 stores and enjoys annual revenue of more than $4 billion.
Through the decades, the company has become a thing of local lore, having been started in Arvada by a young World War II veteran named Lloyd King, who came up with the store’s unique name by combining his last name with the phrase “Super!” that was used repeatedly in the Archie newspaper comic strip.
In its early years, the chain was the first of its kind to have an inside pharmacy and was also the first in the state to offer a self-service meat department.
Adding new locations varying in size between 65,000 and 75,000 square feet throughout the Centennial State, the chain was purchased by the Kroger Company in 1982 but has retained its original name.
Now plans have been announced for the construction of a new King Soopers outlet in Windsor after town officials took the extraordinary step of offering the company some $6 million in incentives to establish a new location.
The new store will be the company’s second outlet in Windsor, a presence said to respond to a population boom that has seen the town jump from 9,800 people in the late 1990s to around 36,000 today.
Plans call for the store to be built near the intersection of Main Street and Colorado State Highway 392 on the east side of the town, with work beginning sometime next year.
