A more than century-old structure in downtown Las Vegas, New Mexico will soon be retrofitted for a new purpose.
Located at 622 Douglas Avenue, the two-story historic building in a city well populated with historic buildings has for years been the main branch office for the Southwest Capital Bank.
Now, the City of Las Vegas has made a move to purchase the structure, with the intent of turning it into the new City Hall.
In a press release issued by the City, it was noted that members of the Las Vegas City Council unanimously approved a resolution in favor of a $1.5 million purchase of the structure, which was originally the home to the San Miguel National Bank.
Chez Steel, chief executive officer of Southwest Capital, said the transaction isn’t “simply about leaving an old building behind. It is about giving an important building a new chapter.”
Continued Steel: “Instead of sitting partially occupied or underutilized, it will remain a working building serving the people of Las Vegas.”
Southwest Capital occupied the structure, which was previously the home to the Bank of Las Vegas, for more than a decade
City officials have said that the bank building, with its front four Roman Columns and detailed decorative molding, will offer more office space than what is available at the current City Hall at 1700 N. Grand Avenue.
