Six New Mexico cities are receiving a combination of $6.6 million in state funding for a wide variety of facility and infrastructure projects.
The support is coming out of the New Mexico Economic Development Department, working with the innovative New Mexico MainStreet program, and is made up of capital outlay funding earlier approved by the New Mexico State Legislature.
Among the larger awards, at $1.7 million each, are funding for improvements to the Main Street of Clovis, and street construction work in Tucumcari.
Some $1.09 million is targeting the Clayton-Union County Economic Development Partnership for the design and construction of an entertainment and food container park, which will include a small performance stage, splash pad, shaded seating areas, walking paths, and landscaping.
The Alamogordo MainStreet project is receiving exactly $1 million for pedestrian safety and general streetscape improvements on two blocks of its New York Avenue.
Launched in 1984, the New Mexico MainStreet program has been responsible for the renovation of upwards of 3,400 individual buildings, as well as taking on larger block revitalization efforts. There are currently 32 separate MainStreet Districts in the state, along with another defined thirteen Arts & Cultural Districts.
The program has been especially vigorous in its efforts to save, upgrade, and revive any number of small city and town movie houses.
In a statement announcing the new funding, Rob Black, Economic Development Secretary Designate, said investments in the MainStreet program have proven to be “vital to sustaining and growing robust, vibrant, people-centered commercial districts throughout rural New Mexico.”
