Funding to the tune of $2 million has been secured by New Mexico State University for two projects that will see the construction replacement of baseball and softball turf fields.
The baseball field is located at the school’s Askew Field, while the softball field belongs to the New Mexico State Softball Complex and are both a part of a larger $3.2 million approved by lawmakers in Santa Fe as capital outlay requests.
The next largest NMSU project signed into law by Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham is seeing $450,000 approved to plan, design, and build new softball and women’s soccer facilities.
The school is additionally receiving $300,000 for the planning and building of new volleyball facilities, as well as $225,000 for the upgrade planning and construction of the Coca Cola Weight Training Center.
The capital outlay projects were listed in House Bill 450 and approved by lawmakers in the final days of the New Mexico State Legislature’s winter session.
While NMSU received nearly 9% of the funding it requested for a wide variety of campus projects, Lujan Grisham vetoed several projects that had been approved by lawmakers, the largest of which was $15 million for the renovation of a press box at the Aggie Memorial Stadium.
The funding-approved projects at NMSU are a part of just over $70 million originally passed by lawmakers for larger Dona Ana County but subsequently reduced due to the Governor’s vetoes.
