Plans are underway in Yuma to transform a modernistic structure that once housed a Sears store into a new pickleball facility.

The Sears outlet, located at 3150 S. 4th Avenue as part of the city’s Southgate Mall, closed in 2018 during a nationwide restructuring by the company that shuttered around 260 other locations.

Now the company Desert Padel and Pickleball Club wants to transform the one-story, 89,000-square-feet structure into a new indoor sports facility that will include eleven pickle ball and six paddle courts.

The project, which is being designed by the Yuma-based Innov-R, will also see the creation of restaurant, food court, and wellness and community event space. The new facility has been described by the Yuma Sun as a “state of the art indoor sports and community events facility.”

The project is currently in development with work expected to begin later this year.
