Plans have been announced in Colorado Springs for the building of an affordable senior housing project that will include just under 160 residential units and go up on the southeast side of the city.
The project belongs to the Szanton Company, which is based in Portland, Maine, and specializes in affordable mixed-income housing throughout New England and in Colorado.
Called the Sugar Bowl Grove, the new Colorado Springs project will be geared for those 65 years of age and older and is expected to cost around $58 million to complete. The affordability feature of the project will see units reserved for seniors earning anywhere between 40% and 60% of the Area Median Income.
Set to go up near the intersection of South Academy Boulevard and Chelton Road in a mostly suburban part of the city, the project will also include an activity center to be run by the non-profit Silver Key Senior Services, also of Colorado Springs, which provides social activities, education classes, and meals for seniors in the city.
If the project secures city approval, it is thought that work on the Sugar Bowl Grove may begin sometime in 2027 or 2028.
The Szanton Company, which was launched in 1996, set up offices in Denver in 2022. Late last year the company began work on a $26 million, 76-unit income restricted complex in Fort Collins.
