Plans are moving ahead for the construction of an upscale restaurant in Phoenix that will belong to a company operating more than a dozen eateries across the country.

The Hillstone Restaurant Group has announced that it wants to build a new restaurant at 3103 E. Camelback Road some eight miles to the northeast of downtown Phoenix on property it earlier purchased for $8.1 million.

The company currently operates restaurants primarily in California, but also has three outlets in Colorado and four in Texas, among other locations nationally.

To make way for the new project, Hillstone will demolish an existing 11,000-square-foot structure at the E. Camelback site which formerly housed the Donovan’s Steak & Chop House. That business, opened in 2004, ceased operations in 2018.

Donovan’s closed a second location in La Jolla in 2019.

A permit for the demolition was issued to Hillstone by the City of Phoenix earlier this month.
