A Gilbert project that will see the building of a new retail center on the south side of the city has taken an important step forward with a rezoning approval from the city’s planning commission.
Members of that commission on March 4 gave a thumbs up to a four-phase project that will go up on some 16 acres at the southeast corner of Higley and Ocotillo roads.
According to city documents, the project will include just under 129,000 square feet to be specifically occupied by a Target store outlet, a measurement within range of the 125,000 to 135,000 square feet of the average Target store.
Also anticipated: a bank, which will take up some 8,000 square feet and a restaurant at around 3,000 square feet.
The site will also include a parking lot with space for nearly 540 vehicles.
The project designer is the architectural firm of Ware Malcomb of Irvine, California. Developer of the project is the Scottsdale-based Simon CRE, which asked for a general commercial zoning for the site.
Based in Minneapolis, Target currently has nearly 2,000 stores, with just under 50 located in the Grand Canyon State.
