Work is expected to begin later this year on a 64-unit apartment complex in Phoenix that some area residents think is too tall for the neighborhood.
The Turney Villas will go up on a currently vacant 1.8-acre site on the northeast corner of 21st Street and Turney Avenue.
The project, which is being developed by the company 4401 Turney Villas LLC, will include a combination of studio and one- and two-bedroom units, along with a swimming pool, clubhouse, and gym.
City documents additionally indicate that the project will “provide pedestrian connections to the adjacent residential developments in the area.” Sidewalks surrounding the site, “will include trees for shade coverage.”
The design firm of Kenzy Architects and Interiors of Scottsdale has signed on as project designer.
A compromise was reached after the developer agreed to build three stories to the front of the project, allowing for four stories to go up a bit further back.
The complex, which is regarded as an infill project, is going up in the Camelback East Village neighborhood of Phoenix, a part of the city which first saw significant residential construction in the boom years of the 1920s.
