![]() Plans are moving forward for the construction of a massive surf and water park in Maricopa, Arizona that will feature lagoons and a variety of entertainment options on a vast 71-acre site. It will be developed by the company PHX Surf LLC, which is based in Mesa, and will also see the building of an 80-room hotel, and a combination of retail and restaurant space encompassing some 31,000 square feet. As envisioned, the project will go on vacant land up to the west of North Loma Road and south of Arizona State Route 238. Uniquely, according to the most recent plans for the project, the site will also see the construction of 42 one- and two-bedroom surf villas. The project has been in the planning and talking stage for well over a year and supported by city leaders. Last year, then-Mayor Christian Price described the surf and water park as Maricopa’s “first dabble into the tourism industry.” Price added: “We don’t have a Grand Canyon; we don’t have a snow-capped mountain that people come to, so we have to get creative.” According to a recent Planned Area Development application submitted to the city, the project will center on the building of two surf lagoons measuring around 5 acres each. Up to 11 acres of parking space will be built at the site, accessed by a primary entrance road off State Route 238. An exact construction schedule for the project remains to be released. I pray we will be getting some upscale restaurants as we already have too many fast food places which are unhealthy and boring. We need a Chili's, Olive Garden or something similar.

As a local resident, I'm excited to see this surf and water park project moving forward in Maricopa. It sounds like a great way to draw more tourism and activity to our city. The lagoons, villas, and entertainment options will really make this a destination for families and outdoor enthusiasts. My only concern is that they incorporate greenery and sustainable building practices to help the park blend into the natural landscape. I hope the city continues to pursue smart development like this that will put Maricopa on the map!
