North Central Arizona Two-Year College Asking for Bond to Fund Variety of New Construction and Upgrades

A growing community college based in Flagstaff has announced plans to build a modern allied health facility on one of its Flagstaff campuses.

Coconino Community College, with a current enrollment of around 3,500 students, also wants to reconstruct the entirety of its existing Fourth Street campus, also in Flagstaff, into a high-tech facility that will house a variety of construction trades programs.

The current Fourth Street campus, at 3000 N. Fourth Street, is made up of a single, one-story structure that was built in the 1980s and was formerly a strip mall.

To fund these efforts, the school is placing on this November’s ballot a proposal calling for a $100 million general obligation bond. The question will be the first time since 2000 that the institution has asked voters to approve such a proposal.

The school, which was opened in the summer of 1991, has three campuses: two in Flagstaff and a third in Page, 129 miles to the north.

Additional work to be funded by the bond includes the building of a Career and Technical Education lab space at the Williams High School in the city of Williams, nearly 40 miles to the west.

In a public statement, the school said the reason for the bond is simple: “We’re out of space, and that limits our ability to grow. Without more room, we can’t expand programs or meet the urgent workforce needs of our community.”
