Northern Rural Colfax County Receiving More Than $20 Million in New Mexico Funding for a Variety of Projects

Funding has been secured for a project in the village of Angel Fire that will see the construction of a new fire station.

New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham has approved a capital outlay earlier passed by members of the state legislature delegating $5.2 million to the building of the new facility.

Work on Fire Station Number 1, which is already in the design phase, is expected to begin later this year. Village officials, meanwhile, have said that applications for grants may be completed later this year to cover any additional expenses.

The village’s fire department is tasked with serving the needs of a northern New Mexico population of around 1,200 residents, as well as the rural surrounding area.

The $5.2 million for the new fire station is part of a total $20 million in Colfax County approved capital outlay projects. The largest outlay at $7.4 million is targeting construction of a new long term care facility in the town of Springer; with $2 million going for the building of a new visitor center at the Sugarite Canyon State Park in Raton.

Just over $1.2 million has won approval for work at the Angel Fire Veterans Center, located adjacent to the New Mexico State Vietnam Veterans Memorial on Country Club Road.

Smaller Colfax County capital outlay projects approved by the Governor include $125,000 for the building of a new animal shelter in Raton; and $100,000 for improvements to Springer’s water system.
