A roughly 50,500-square-foot building in the town of Oro Valley may soon be repurposed for use as new police headquarters.
Located at on a six-acre site at 13101 North Oracle Road, the structure has served as the home to the Rancho Vistoso Urgent Care service. Built in 2001, the one-story building is classified as a Class B structure.
Town officials have said that the current building housing the Oro Valley Police Department at 11000 North La Canada Drive is too small for today’s needs.
It has been estimated that it would cost at least $15 million to expand the North La Canada Drive location, money town officials have said could be better spent on a separate and larger facility elsewhere.
Work on the North Oracle Road structure, which the town has purchased for $3.8 million, will see the creation of new offices, along with new training space and rooms for investigations.
According to published reports, the repurposing work on the building will be done in phases.
The expansion of the police headquarters reflects the ongoing expansion of the town of Oro Valley itself, which is located 6 miles to the north of Tucson and has seen its population jump from 6,600 in the 1990s to just under 50,000 today.
