Phoenix to See Construction of Yet One More School in Growing District

Plans have now been announced for the construction of a new elementary school in a growing district that is currently seeing the building of around 500 new houses on the southwest side of Phoenix.

The Laveen School District encompasses nine schools serving a current enrollment of more than 7,500 students, up from 2,500 two decades ago. Now the district will have one more school to be located at a currently vacant site at the intersection of South 59th Avenue and West Olney Avenue.

Members of the Phoenix City Council have voted in favor of entering into an agreement with the school district that would allow for the building of a kindergarten to 8th grade facility on some 20 acres.

Those acres are part of a larger chunk of property the city earlier purchased with the intention of building a community park.

According to the agreement forged by the two entities, Laveen will pay either an outright sum of $5.8 million or $78,400 annually to Phoenix for use of the site.
