Public input meetings are scheduled to be held between now and October in Phoenix on a project that will see the 10-mile expansion of the city’s light rail system.
The proposed West Phoenix Extension has been in the talking stage for more than a year and is regarded as one of the city’s most impactful transit infrastructure projects.
The project is the result of a study officially called the West Phoenix High-Capacity Transit Alternatives Analysis which for two years studied transit route options on the growing west side of the city.
That study led to consideration of a route that would connect to an existing line at either the Indian School Route or 19th Avenue.
The public input meetings, the first of which is scheduled to be held on August 19, will focus not only on the route itself, according to a City of Phoenix notice, but also “potential stations, park-and-ride locations,” and a “maintenance facility assessment.”
Planning for the new project comes after the transit operator, Valley Metro, completed roughly two years ago a $401 million, 1.6-mile extension running along 19th Avenue. That project, reported the Arizona Republic, produced the system’s “first elevated station and rail-only bridge,” along with a four-story parking garage.
Funding for the 19th Avenue extension came through a combination of voter-approved funds via the Phoenix Transportation 2050 plan as well as a $158 million Federal Transit Administration capital investment grant.
Earlier this year members of the Phoenix City Council voted in favor of authorizing the Indian School Route option, an alternative that won particular favor after residents along that route said they thought the project would stimulate economic development and make it easier for young people in the area to connect with jobs.
Funding for the project has not yet been secured, but is expected to come from local, state, and Federal Transit Administration funds.
