In a move designed to support the development of next-generation geothermal energy in New Mexico, the company Meta Platforms has entered into an agreement with XGS Energy Incorporated as part of a larger plan to meet a growing energy demand.
Based in Menlo Park, California, Meta owns and operates several of the biggest social platforms in the world, including Facebook and Instagram. In 2019, the company opened a $1 billion data center in Los Lunas, as part of what is now a seven-building campus.
Now Meta plans to develop some 150 megawatts and is looking at the XGS Energy of Houston to help reach that goal.
In a statement, Urvi Parekh, global head of energy at Meta, noted that “with next-generation geothermal technologies like XGS ready for scale, geothermal can be a major player in supporting the advancement of technologies like AI as well as domestic data center development.”
The agreement was similarly hailed by Josh Prueher, XGS Energy’s chief executive officer, who said the partnership between the two companies will “accelerate access to new round-the-clock power supplies.”
Construction of a new $1.2 billion power plant resulting from the agreement between the two companies is expected to occur in two phases with a possible completion date as early as 2028.
Meta announced earlier this year that it plans to build two new structures at its 750-acre Los Lunas.
In announcing the big Meta/XGS agreement, New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham noted that the state has become “one of the nation’s leading sources of clean energy.” She added that the agreement will result in “good-paying jobs” while strengthening the state’s grid “with reliable baseload power.”
