An effort is underway to build a new animal shelter, which it is expected to cost at least $2 million to complete, in a small town in north central Colorado.
The facility will go up Granby, which has a population of just over 2,000 people and will belong to the Grand County Animal Shelter.
The current shelter has been located for more than two decades at 3475 Colorado Road 57 on the west side of town at a larger site that is also the home to the Granby Sanitation District.
A non-profit group called Grand County Pet Pals, which funds spaying and neutering services, earlier launched a successful fundraising drive to purchase land for the new shelter just to the west of U.S. Route 40 near the Kaibab Park.
In October members of the Granby Board of Trustees gave their approval to a plat of the area, allowing Pet Pals to then purchase the land needed for the new shelter for $144,000.
Pet Pals is now in the process of raising funds to build the new shelter and has so far secured upwards of $800,000 in donations.
Reports have indicated that besides providing up-to-date kennel facilities, the new one-story shelter will also include office space, an adoption lobby, and both internal and external play space.
