Efforts to redevelop a durable shopping center site in Denver are still on, if somewhat recalibrated.
Located at 765 S. Colorado Boulevard, the seven-acre Belcaro Shopping Center has for years been anchored by a King Soopers supermarket, and previously included both a Radio Shack and Office Depot outlet, as well as a local store called Mike’s Camera.
Last year the Denver-based developer Kentro Group submitted to the City of Denver a concept plan that would see the retail property transformed into residential space that will include 350 housing units.
Central to the project, as originally envisioned, were three 12-story towers housing both market rate and affordable housing units. But, responding to concerns from neighbors, the developers have since opted to build a four-story structure instead.
Plans also call for the project to include a leasing office, fitness center, clubhouse, and private court yards.
Before anything goes up, however, the existing retail buildings at the site will be demolished.
It is not known when the city will approve the plans for the Belcaro site, but King Soopers has said it will be leaving the shopping center soon while another outlet for the grocery store chain is set to soon open roughly a mile away.
