A popular convenience store gas station chain based in Mexico is making plans for more locations in the U.S., with a specific focus on the southwest.

The Oxxo company, which was launched in 1977, has enjoyed substantial growth, not only in Mexico but also throughout Latin America, and is today the largest such chain in the region.

Oxxo locations sell a variety of home goods, in addition to food, snacks, and beverages, and provides money transfer services.

With locations also based in Canada, Oxxo is becoming a larger presence in the U.S. market, having acquired just under 250 stores that once belonged to the company Dalek US Holdings, which is based in Brentwood, Tennessee.

In the months since that late 2024 purchase, Oxxo has rebranded Dalek properties primarily in west Texas. Besides the seven stores the company is now rebranding in metro El Paso, there is planned 72 more before the end of 2027.

In an announcement, the company said it was strengthening its presence in “the regions where it already operates, adapting its model to local preferences, and consolidating stores that deliver practicality, accessibility, and genuine commitment to the community.”

The company has done particularly well in focusing on customer needs. In an interview with Convenience Store Products magazine, Hal Adams, chief executive officer of Oxxo, said, “We don’t call our stores ‘convenience stores’ we call them ‘proximity stores’ because they’re stores that provide our customers with whatever they need when they need it.”

The company currently has around 20,000 stores in Mexico, as well as more than 2,100 locations in larger Latin America. Oxxo has said that it regularly serves upwards of 13 million customers daily.
