popular phoenix neighborhood park to get upgrade

A park, located roughly 3 miles to the east of downtown Phoenix, may soon be seeing a long-planned upgrade.

City officials want to build what is called an “activity hub” inside the existing Edison Park, located at 901 N. 19th street in a working class and public housing neighborhood of the city.

The newly-designed and built hub, on a .23-acre piece of land partly made up of paving, will see the construction of open-air shelter, seating, and a new turf area.

The project will also include the construction of irrigation infrastructure, site lighting, and an electrical system.

A public art component is also expected to be incorporated into the project, which will be paid for with federal funds.

Located in the Phoenix’s Edison-Eastlake neighborhood and operated by Phoenix’s City Parks and Recreation Department, the 4.8-acre Edison Park already features a splash pad, basketball court, and picnic area.

When work will begin on the new hub has not yet been announced.
