New residential development is expected to be an important part of a multi-year, ambitious plan to expand the Alterra Mountain Company’s ski resort property in Winter Park, Colorado.

Members of the Winter Park Town Council have given their approval to rezoning the land in question and by so doing, allowing for the probable construction of nearly 3,000 residential and hotel units.

Alterra, which is based in Denver, is the owner of a series of large resorts in California, Colorado, Idaho, Vermont, and West Virginia, among other places, and acquired the Winter Park Resort in 2017.

One of the oldest resorts in the region, Winter Park, some 60 miles to the northwest of Denver, was first opened to skiers in late 1939. The resort currently has a ski area more than 3,000 acres, with nearly 170 trails.

The rezoning will allow Winter Park to increase its ski terrain by some 250 acres, while also allowing for the construction of 250,000 square feet of commercial space.

Additional work will see the building of a gondola, with construction expected to begin next summer and be completed by 2030.

In a statement, Winter Park said that the site expansion and new facility construction is designed to respect and embrace “the natural world around us.”

“A project like the one we are imagining is complex and ever evolving,” the statement adds. “We’re working with our partners and designers to be nimble, thoughtful, and sustainable in our approach.”

Upon completion, the expansion efforts at Winter Park will make it the third-largest ski area in the Centennial State, following only Vail and Steamboat.
