Plans are moving ahead incrementally for the building of what has been described as a massive mixed-use project in Gilbert, Arizona.
Members of the Gilbert Town Council have now given their approval to taking a second look at the proposed Harvest Grove project which, if built, could see the construction of just under 1,700 housing units.
In late January that same council, concerned that about the project’s size and density, voted against it.
As proposed, Harvest Grove, to go up at the southeast corner of Germann Road and Val Vista Drive, will include commercial space, a community park, several pocket parks, and a trail corridor.
Set to be built on a total of some 311 vacant farmland acres, the project is expected to see first phase work launching next year, with a general completion date of 2032.
According to town documents, upon completion Harvest Grove is expected to be the home to around 4,800 people.
The project, to be built by developer Lennar Homes, has been the subject of months of hearings and discussion. Opponents have said that the development is too large for the area and would create traffic problems, among other issues.
The developer, however, has since submitted a revised plan eliminating 63 residential units, and adding a new road and additional access points.
According to the latest plans, Harvest Grove will include 965 single family units and 713 multifamily units. Around 45 acres will be made up of commercial space.
A narrative earlier submitted to Gilbert described the project as including a “carefully curated selection of retail, shopping, dining, and entertainment spaces.”
