Roswell Recreation Space to See Long-Planned Upgrades

A popular public park in Roswell that already includes walking trails, soccer fields, and a recreation and aquatic center, may soon be in store for a significant upgrade.

The city’s Infrastructure Committee has recommended launching a survey and master plan process that could result in the construction of up to 8 baseball fields in the Cielo Grande Recreation Area, located at 1612 W. College Boulevard.

According to city documents, what is being called the Cielo Grande Sports Complex will entail 370 acres serving as an inclusive park, with “an 8-field baseball complex, access, parking, driveways, pedestrian access, drainage and utility infrastructure.”

The master plan area encompasses the area bounded by College Boulevard on the north, Sycamore on the west, 8th Street to the south, and Montana Avenue on the east.

In making its decision, the Infrastructure Committee also recommended contracting out with Bohannan Huston, Inc., which has offices in Albuquerque, to take on a survey of the park, as well as the master plan work.

The project is ultimately expected to be the subject of at least half a dozen outreach meetings in the months to come involving the general public, members of the Roswell City Council, and what are described as “appropriate user groups.”

The Roswell Recreation and Aquatic Center, at the same site, was a $23 million project completed in the summer of 2019.
